Mary Willis Sweat

Mary Willis Sweat, 81 was welcomed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday September 5, 2019.

Mary devoted her life to teaching children about Jesus and leading them to the Lord. She was very passionate about this, she started the Halifax County Child Evangelism Program and served as local director and enjoyed teaching Backyard Bible classes to the children of Halifax County. She was a long time Sunday School teacher at Community Free Will Baptist Church for over 58 years. She has touched the lives of adults and children all over the World. She has served as a volunteer for Vidant/Halifax Regional Medical Center for over 15 years. She also served as a member and officer of the local AMETS and American Legion for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. Sweat, her mother, Novella Willis, her father and step mother Ralph and Leona Willis, her sister, Doris St. Sing, her brothers, Fred, George and Butch Willis. Left to continue her legacy and cherish her memory are her daughters, Wanda Butts and her husband, Mike of Aurelian Springs, Phyllis Stanfield, Kathy Acree and her husband, Linwood, Michelle Jackson and her husband, Doug all of Roanoke Rapids. Step daughter, Ann Lockerby of Dudley; grandchildren, Paul Stanfield (Cindy), Joey Stanfield (Michelle), Angela Mahaffey (Tony), Alan Acree, Alison Epps, Jennifer Pendergrass (David), Brandi Jackson and Fiance, Jay, Zachary Jackson, Michael Butts (Sarah), Julie Hart (Bo), Curtis Lockerby (Kay), Daniel Lockerby (Glenda), Dana Stocks, Josh Pendergrass (Heather); great grandchildren; Kenleigh and Cole Stanfield, Brittney Baker, Michaela and Brantley Harrison, Taylor Epps, A. J. Acree, Jennifer Cook, Gene and Ashton Langley, Camden Butts, Morris, Bobby and Haley Stocks, Andrew and Danielle Lockerby and Carsyn Pendergrass; her sister, Francis Bowser , brother, Troy Willis both of Hampstead brother-in-law, Floyd Sweat of Hope Mills; Special lifelong friend, Shirley Baird, special friend and care taker, Carolyn Dickens and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday September 8, 2019 at 3 P.M. at Community Free Will Baptist Church in Weldon with Rev. John Horrell, Rev. Tony Smith and Rev. Larry Matthews officiating.

Interment will follow in Crestview memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.
